An oral biopsy is a procedure used to diagnose various conditions, including periodontal disease, oral cancer and other dental pathologies. When you undergo an oral biopsy at our office, our dentist will first sterilize a small area of your mouth and administer a local anesthetic to ensure you remain comfortable throughout the procedure. In cases where the biopsy site is difficult to access, we might use a general anesthetic to allow you to sleep through the process.
During the biopsy, a small tissue sample will be carefully removed from your mouth. This sample is then sent to a specialized laboratory for analysis. The analysis helps diagnose the cause of issues such as:
- Persistent ulcers, sores or lesions on your gums
- White or red patches on your gums
- Chronic swelling of the gums
- Changes in your gums that cause teeth or oral appliances to become loose
Oral biopsies may be complemented by imaging technologies like X-rays, CT scans or MRI scans for a comprehensive evaluation. Once the biopsy results are in, our dentist will develop a tailored treatment plan to address your specific needs and restore your oral health.
After the biopsy, you can expect the numbing effect of the anesthetic to last for several hours. Once it wears off, you can resume your regular activities and normal diet. However, we recommend avoiding brushing the biopsy area for a few days to allow it to heal properly. If you experience bleeding, swelling or prolonged soreness in the biopsy area, please contact our office immediately.
If you have any questions about oral biopsies or wish to schedule an appointment with our dentist, please call our office. Our team is here to ensure you receive the best possible care and to support you through every step of the process.
